Note | 2) Profession: - joiner carp - also photographer (details from "A New History of Swanland" compiled by The Swanland Village History Group) Additional Notes: =============== The Calvert family is included on the Directories of village trades, with the first reference being found in 1891. There is an overlap of Calverts in these directories, as successive generations conti> nued the family business. : 1901 Calvert, W 1910 Calvert, W 1913 Calvert, W 1916 Calvert, W Calvert, L 1921 Calvert, W Calvert, L 1939 Calvert, L It is assumed that W Calvert refers to Walter Calvert b1948, as the only other W was Martha's husband William Henry, and he died in 1903. It is also assumed that L Calvert refers to Louis Calvert b1878, who was Walter's son, and William Henry's brother. Currently the joiner's shop is still run by the Calvert family. The photo below shows the workshops on the right of the picture, still in the same position as they were in the 1910 census along the si> de of the road. The building to the left still has the name of "W. Calvert" across the door. We believe this refers to William Calvert b1914. He has since died, and the business is currently run by hi> s son Jeremy. The Calvert family had their premises in the West End, with a workshop on the roadside, and open woodsheds in the yard behind. By 1930, their machinery in the workshops was powered be electricity. In 1928, Louis Calvert was a member of the Independent Chapel. He is quoted as being wholy responsible for the complete refurbishment of this Chapel in 1928. A wooden Village Hall was constructed next door to the Calvert Joiner's shop 1919-1922 Louis Calvert lived in Boulder Cottage. He took up photography as a hobby. His portraits usually have L.C. impressed in the corner, and the frames have gilded edges bearing his name. In 1920, Louis Calvert (Bill's father) was appointed as one of the new Managers of the Village school. In 1935, Louis Calvert was the sole remaining trustee of the voluntary non provided school He bought a radiogram for the school in 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V. The LEA then> paid for an electric cable & socket to be routed to the main schoolroom. In 1947, Louis Calvert presented the school with a commemorative plaque (which hangs in the current school entrance). It had the names of 4 former pupils who died during World War II inscribed on it |

Note | Additional comments: ==================== In the 1851 census there is no record of Hannah's husband John. Hannah had already re-married George Wilson. She, and her two youngest sons Thomas and John were living with George Wilson, at the time of the 1851 census. We now have details of Hannah (a widow) marrying George Wilson in 1849, so John must have died between 1841 and 1849. George Wilson was a shoemaker(master) in the 1851 census, and Thomas had become an apprentice. This is how the Warkups became shoemakers. Prior to this they had almost all been involved in agriculture. |
