Personal Notes
| Note | Additional notes ============== In 1881 census, we have George Ward (aged 30) living in Scunthorpe with his wife Ann (aged 29) and their children : John T (aged 7) and Fred (aged 4).
In 1901 census, we have Freddy Ward (aged 24) living in Radley St, The Green, Ossett, Dewsbury with his wife Rachel (aged 23).
The 1911 census lists Freddy as having 3 children with 2 still living, so we have a missing child of Freddy & Rachel. It might prove difficult to find the extra child who died as there were an awful lot of children under 10 dying in Osset around that time.
Freddy died in 1919 before his son Jack was born later that year.
Freddy's death certificate list him as an army pensioner, and his army records give more clues about his death:
Territorial Reserve Enlistment Papers: 4th Battalion Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (1908)

Character : Exemplary Place of Birth : Emley Children's Allowance : Daniel (DOB 21.12.1901) Alice (DOB 10.5.1904) Freda Russell (DOB 29.4.1910) George (DOB 10.7.1913) Cause of Discharge : Chronic Nephritis
Report of Medical Board (dated 11.2.1916) :
Originated Oct 1915 at Ypres. Was invalided home with considerable oedema, headache and vomitting attacks. Had had epistaxis on one occasion, but no haematuria. Cause:- Exposure. Result of active service. Exposure. Permanent. Prevents 1/4, duration uncertain - may be permanent or may improve in 6 months.
============================================================ Freddy was assessed each 6 months following his medical discharge from the army, but his condition did not improve. He eventually died from the condition which caused him th be discharged (Chronic Nephritis) in 1919. During 1915 the 4th Battallion was known as the 148th Brigade 49th Division, and was engaged in trench warfare. The regimental war diaries state that the trenches were full of water and continually collapsing in. We assume that this continual exposure was the cause of his condition.
