Personal Notes

NoteWe believe that John that married Bathsheba was born in Hornsea. There is a 'spare' John born around the same time in Mappleton, but John's marriage to Bathsheba describes him as 'of Atwick', which is closer to Hornsea than Mappleton is.

Personal Notes

NoteAdditional Notes:
===============
In 1881 we have Edward Hunter (aged 34) living in Cowpen, Northumberland with his wife Mary (aged 29) and their children: Robert (aged 11), Edward (aged 8), Hannah (aged 6), Martha J (aged 4), Thomas (aged 3) and Isabella (aged 9 months) - see below

In 1901 census, we have William H Calvert (aged 26) living in Swanland with his wife Martha J (aged 25) ane their son Walter E (aged 1)

William Henry Calvert died aged 28 leaving Martha a widow with a son Walter. She earned her living as the village postmistress running the PostOffice from the cottage attached to Turkey Hall. She was originally one of 8 children born in Northumberland, but we do not know (as yet) how she came to be in Swanland.

Another early family photograph we have (see UnusualFeaturesIndex) shows a woman standing outside this post-office. We know that Martha's brother-in-law Louis was a keen photographer, could this be a photo taken by Loius of Martha outside the Post Office she ran ?

Turkey Hall is still standing, and is still owned, and lived in, by the Calvert family. The Post-Office is now the site of a garage attached to Turkey Hall.

Martha Calvert began running the Post Office some time between 1901 and 1910. There are entries in the Directories of Trades for the village showing the owner of the post-office in a number of different years:

1901 Frow, J.M.
1910 Calvert, Martha
1913 Calvert, Martha
1916 Calvert, Martha
1921 Calvert, Martha
1939 Calvert, Martha

We know Martha ran the Post-Office for forty years, until she retired. The business was then bought back by the Frow family, and it moved back across the road next door to Boulder Cottage, where it is still located today.

A quote written of her by George Patton "For forty years of her widowhood, she carried on her duties in all weathers with efficiency and satisfaction.. Her energy and affability have been a constant wonder"
