We are currently unable to locate the original images for this census record. The assumprion is that Hess was in fact Hugh, with the 'ugh' being misread as 'ef' which would have been interpreted as 'ess'. (Remembering that 'f' was an old-fashioned way of writing 'ss'). Hess is not mentioned in any future census, and Hugh is not mentioned n the 1881 census, so the assumption is that they are in fact the same person. In 1881 Canadian census, we have Thomas Warcup (aged 66) living in Ste Pierre-de-Broughton, Megantic, Quebec with his wife Mary Jane (aged56), and (presumably) their children : Ann (aged 31), Hanna (aged 24), Hess (aged 2), Ellen (aged 21), Jane (aged 18), John (aged 16), Walter (aged 14) and Margaret (aged 10) - see below In 1901 Canadian census, we have Hugh Warcup (aged 43) living in Leeds, Megantic, Quebec with his wife Lazy (aged 40) and their children : Elizabeth (aged 3) and William A (aged 1). Also in the house is Hugh's cousin (listed as a lodger) Malcom Warcup (aged 37) - see below In 1911 Canadian census, we have Hugh Warcup (aged 53) living in Leeds, Megantic, Quebec with his wife Elizabeth (aged 50) and their children : William Alfred (aged 11) and Ella (aged 9). Also in the house is Hugh's niece Elizabeth Suitor (aged 13) - see below Reference found for St James Cemetery, Leeds Village, Megantic, Quebec : Warcup Hugh, b 03 Jun 1858, d 30 Mar 1940 NB - birth date is different on monumental inscription compared with baptism record LINKS: 1881 census Parish baptism record Parish marriage record 1901 census 1911 census |
