East Yorkshire trees

Warkup Maps

There are a number of Warcup/Warkup families based in various locations in North & East Yorkshire. They fall into two (currently) distinct groups. This page is dedicated to studying how the Warkups spread around the counties. (There are also a number of Warkups in Durham, but the original records are not available as yet so research on this branch will have to wait). The trees for each town/village on this page are transcribed from images of the early parish registers.

Taking the East Yorkshire Warcups

East Yorkshire Map

EastYorkshireMap This shows the movement of the Flamborough family as it spreads to different villages. You can see from this map that this group originated in Flamborough, and subsequently spread to Skipsea, Hornsea, Beeford, Mappleton, Burton Pidsea, Withernwick, Skirlaugh and Preston. We are convinced they link to the North Yorkshire Warcups but are yet to find definitive link (other than by marriage).

Flamborough

FlamboroughTree Currently at the top of the Flamborough tree is a John Warcup born abt 1679 who married Milchy Leconbry in Flamborough. We are convinced he is related to the North Yorkshire Warcups who were in the area at the same time. John and Milchy went on to have only one son (John b 1716) who moved to Skipsea where he married Jane Foster.

There are numerous other Warcup families in Flamborough which are all related (by marriage) to each other. We have various "heads" at the top of each of these trees and are working backwards prior to 1700 to see if we can prove they are all related.

Skipsea

SkipseaTree John Warcup (b 1716) is at the head of the Skipsea tree having moved from Flamborough. He married twice and between the two marriges had 14 children. In fact, all the Warcups in Skipsea are descended from John, with a couple of notable exceptions (William and Hannah) shown on the tree. John's last child (John b 1771) moved to Beeford after marrying Jane Stephenson in Skipsea in 1796.

Beeford UNCONNECTED

BeefordUnconnectedTree One interesting thing to see in a village/town is when a family moved into the area and whether all the Warcups in that area are related. This is a prime example of how we had Warcups in Beeford, marrying in 1660 well before John & Jane from Skipsea arrived in Beeford. However, the early Warcups in Beeford (descended from two Roberts) had a large portion of female descendents and the male ones died. This branch of Warcups died out after the last one was born in 1737. There is then a gap of tens of years until a new Warcup family appears.

Beeford

BeefordTree As you can see from the image, the entire Warcup branch in Beeford post 1771 are all descended from John and Jane who moved into Beeford from Skipsea. They had a large number of descendents who all stayed in Beeford, and every parish record for Beeford is for a member of this extended family.

Hornsea

HornseaTree The link between the Skipsea tree and the Hornsea one is one by marriage, but it is a Warcup-Warcup marriage ! Julianna Warcup (b 1767) is an older sister of the John who moved to Beeford. She married an Isaac Warcup (b1763) who was born in Hornsea. His parents John Warcup and Mary Dunn must be related to the other Warcups in the area, but we have yet to work out where they came from. Isaac's elder brother (yet another) John b 1761 moved to Burton Pidsea to become the head of the family there. Isaacs youngest son (another) Isaac b 1815 moved to Skirlaugh to become one of the Warcup families there, alongside the branch who moved from Withernwick. There was an additional Warcup family in Hornsea who came from Mappleton. William b 1815 and his sister Annis b1813 and their families moved into Hornsea.

Mappleton

MappletonTree The head of the Mappleton branch is a Thomas b1724 who married an Ann. There is no evidence of their marriage in Mappleton and it is suspected that they moved into Mappleton from somewhere else. This is another link yet to prove. Two of Thomas's descendents (William and Annis) both moved to Hornsea. A grandson William b1780 moved to Preston where he married Jane Stephenson and because the head of the Preston branch.

Mappleton UNCONNECTED

MappletonUnconnectedTree We still have a number of distinct small trees in the Mappleton parish records that are yet to be linked to any other branch of the Warcups. It is hoped that over time we may unearth more records that will fill in these missing gaps.

Burton Pidsea

BurtonPidseaTree All the Warcups in Burton Pidsea (with a couple of exceptions shown on the image) are descended from the John who moved from Hornsea. He married Bathsheba Coniston in Hollym originally. After having two children in Humbleton they moved into Burton Pidsea. Their eldest surviving son John (b1795 in Humbleton) moved into Withernwick to become the head of that branch. Their other son Joseph (b1797) stayed in Burton Pidsea, married and subsequently had 13 children.

Withernwick

WithernwickTree John Warcup moved into Withernwick from Burton Pidsea. His family are the only Warcups in the Withernwick parish records. We have not carried forward the families further than the parish registers. Another loop of investigation will see where everyone went (Leeds, Quebec, Ontario etc) after that.

Skirlaugh

SkirlaughTree There are two distinct Warcup families in Skirlaugh in the parish records, one from Hornsea and one from Withernwick. All the Warcups in the parish registers for Skirlaugh are from these two families, with one exception, an Ailsey who is yet to be identified.

Preston

PrestonTree There are two distinct Warcup families in Preston in the parish records, one from Mappleton and one from Burton Pidsea. All the Warcups in the parish registers for Preston are from these two families.
